Ten Hot Jobs To Work From Home

With fuel prices topping four dollars per gallon in some states, many Americans want to keep their paychecks in their pockets and out of their gas tanks. Thanks to cheap Internet access and fast computers, some workers can perform their jobs just as well from home as they can in the office. Government analysts recently identified ten fast-growing jobs that combine higher-than-average hourly wages with the benefits of working from home.
#1: Administrative Services Manager

Traditionally, administrative services managers oversee large support staffs in offices such as hospitals and law firms. As larger employers consolidate responsibilities for multiple locations into a handful of positions, more administrative services managers have earned the option to work some or all of their hours from a home office. Earning an associate's or bachelor's degree in business can help you gain the skills necessary for this managerial telecommuting job that often pays more than $30 per hour.
#2: Computer Systems Analyst

These information technology professionals help companies design state-of-the-art systems to run businesses. As employers use telecommuting jobs as a key strategy in their recruitment efforts, computer systems analysts often test new ideas at their own home offices. Learning about tools like virtual private network (VPN), video chat, and virtual desktops during a computer science degree program can help qualify graduates for home-based jobs that pay over $30 per hour.
#3: Database Manager

All kinds of companies rely on databases, from mom-and-pop service organizations to global retailers. Because most databases can be maintained from any live Internet connection, a growing number of database managers work remotely over secure, private networks. Though some database managers earn salaries from large employers, specialists with business degrees and computer training can earn over $30 an hour working from home as freelance database specialists.
#4: Public Relations Specialist

Because most public relations tasks involve phone or email, many PR specialists enjoy working from home at least a few days per week. With a bachelor's degree in communications, an office veteran can transition to a home-based job writing press releases and responding to media requests. Experienced PR professionals can complete online business training programs to launch their own practices as freelancers in home offices. In both cases, public relations specialists frequently earn more than $22 per hour.
#5: Paralegal

As more Americans seek quality legal representation, many law firms rely more heavily on paralegals for research assignments and routine tasks. Unlike lawyers, who must complete law school and pass a state bar exam, paralegals can start assisting on cases after completing an associate's degree program. Some law firms prefer to hire telecommuting paralegals to avoid adding office space. Other employers like the flexibility of bringing on temporary paralegals to cover sudden spikes in their caseloads. In both cases, many home-based paralegals earn over $20 an hour.
#6: Probation Officer

With many state governments trying to balance crowded jails with increased prosecution, many local agencies seek home-based probation officers. While the job often includes making site visits, many probation officers spend a significant portion of time on the phone or on email from home offices. With a bachelor's degree in social work, an experienced security professional can transition to this home-based career that offers a typical salary of $20 per hour plus government benefits.
#7: Web Design Professional

Early Web designers often received criticism for being teenagers working from home in their parents' attics. However, today's most successful Web design professionals enjoy home offices that boast high-speed Internet connections and fast workstations. Earning over $20 per hour as a home-based Web designer requires design skill, programming prowess, and a solid career portfolio. Most novice designers pick up all three of these success ingredients during Web design degree programs, many of which are available online.
#8: Desktop Publisher

Just as small businesses rely on public relations professionals to tell their stories, company owners look to desktop publishing professionals to make their stories look good in print. Advanced publishing tools now make it possible for desktop publishers to work from home, often earning over $20 as freelancers or in staff positions. Advanced training courses in graphic design and desktop publishing help these specialists retain the cutting-edge skills that help build strong client rosters.
#9: Medical Transcriptionist

As many doctors' offices and health care facilities struggle to meet the demands of increased patient loads, home-based medical transcriptionists ride to the rescue. By leveraging skills gained in campus-based or online medical transcription training programs, these specialists can earn $14 or more per hour without leaving home. In many cases, agencies or employers also cover the costs of computers and Internet connections for efficient transcriptionists.
#10: Virtual Assistant

Bootstrapping a business in today's economy often requires creative thinking. Some of the most creative and successful professionals in consulting, real estate, and health care have realized that they can reap the benefits of having full-time administrative assistance without the costs of expanding their own offices. Virtual assistants provide high-end secretarial tasks on demand for clients, usually from home offices. Completing an online training course is often the first step toward an essential work-from-home job that pays $13 or more per hour.

Nigeria militants 'raze' Shell oil complex

LAGOS, Nigeria (CNN) -- A day after declaring war in Nigeria's oil-rich delta region, the country's main rebel group said Monday it was continuing its "destructive sweep" against oil facilities in Rivers State.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta said its militant forces "stormed" the Alakiri flow station complex, operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company, set fire to the facility and "razed it to the ground."

A day earlier, MEND had warned all international oil workers to evacuate their staff from their facilities because it planned to "bring these structures to the ground."

"The foolhardy workers and soldiers who did not heed our warning perished inside the station," MEND said, referring to the Shell complex.

Shell confirmed that gunmen attacked its Alakiri flow station, gas plant and field logistics base, southwest of Port Harcourt -- killing a guard and wounding four others.

"SPDC (Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria) is saddened by this fatality and our thoughts are with the family of the late station guard," company spokeswoman Caroline Wittgen said in a written statement.

As a precaution, Shell has shut down its facilities in some field locations, but would not give any more details "for security reasons."

"Shell is aware of the difficulty the security situation places on staff, and continues to monitor developments," Wittgen said.

Nigeria's military could not be reached by CNN for comment.

The latest claim by MEND comes a day after it said it attacked oil flow stations and pipelines in response to what it said were "unprovoked" attacks by Nigerian government forces on Saturday.

As part of its operation -- dubbed "Hurricane Barbarossa" -- MEND said it intercepted 22 Nigerian soldiers at the Soku Gas Plant, Chevron Platform at Kula on Sunday. It said the soldiers were "killed and dispossessed of their weapons," but the group did not give more details. It also said it blew up several points on the major crude trunk pipeline at Nembe Creek.

A Chevron spokesman told CNN that it has received reports of shooting near its Robertkiri facilities in Rivers State, but there is no information to suggest the attack was directed at Chevron.

No Chevron employee was hurt as a result of the attack, company spokesman Scott Walker said in an e-mail. But he noted that initial reports suggested two contractors "might have died" in the incident.

MEND has also warned of impending attacks against international companies' oil and gas-loading vessels, warning the ships to "drop anchor in the high sea or divert elsewhere until further notice."

The rebel group hopes to secure a greater share of Nigeria's oil wealth for people in the delta, where more than 70 percent of the population lives on less than a dollar a day.

It vowed to continue its latest assault "until the government of Nigeria appreciates that the solution to peace in the Niger Delta is justice, respect and dialogue."

Nigeria is the fourth-largest supplier of oil to the United States, and attacks by rebels have helped fuel the year-long spike in crude oil prices. It's one of many factors pushing up the price of gas in the United States, where one in every 10 barrels of oil comes from Nigeria.

MEND has targeted international oil companies since 2006, bombing pipelines and kidnapping hundreds of workers. The captives typically are released unharmed, sometimes after a ransom is paid.

Its attacks on oil facilities have taken a toll.

"Anytime a pipeline is affected, anytime any production gets shut down, you see oil prices jump up one or two dollars a barrel just because there is no slack in the system," said Jim LeCamp, a senior vice president with RBC Wealth Management, which manages assets for wealthy clients worldwide.

NEWS UPDATE: Mom allegedly uses daughter's ID to be cheerleader

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — A 33-year-old woman stole her daughter's identity to attend high school and join the cheerleading squad, according to a criminal complaint filed against the woman.

Wendy Brown, of Green Bay, faces a felony identity theft charge after enrolling in Ashwaubenon High School as her 15-year-old daughter, who lives in Nevada with Brown's mother.

According to the complaint, Brown wanted to get her high school degree and become a cheerleader because she didn't have a childhood and wanted to regain a part of her life that she'd missed.

Brown allegedly attended cheerleading practices before school started, received a cheerleader's locker and went to a pool party at the cheerleading coach's house.

The $134.50 check Brown gave to the cheerleading coach for her uniform bounced, the complaint said.

A high school employee, Kim Demeny, told authorities that the woman, posing as the teen, seemed very timid. Demeny said she told her she was not good at math and even cried when she talked about moving from Pahrump Valley High School in Nevada. Demeny said she looked older than a student but had the demeanor of a high school girl.

A school liaison officer started investigating after Brown only attended the first day of classes last week, the complaint said.

Assistant Principal Dirk Ribbins later learned Brown's daughter was enrolled at Pahrump Valley High School. Ribbins also spoke with Brown's mother, who told him she had custody of the girl. She said Brown has a history of identity theft crimes, the complaint said.

Brown made her first court appearance Friday by video conference. The judge set bond at $8,000.

If convicted, she could face up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

There was no attorney listed in Brown's online court records. Her home number could not be found.

NEWS UPDATE: Illinois Priest Accused of Dealing Coke from Rectory

URBANA, Ill. - A Catholic priest on the University of Illinois campus has been charged with selling cocaine from his church office and rectory.

The Reverend Christopher Layden pleaded not guilty Thursday to two counts of delivery of less than 1 gram of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a church and one count of possession with intent to deliver 1 to 15 grams of cocaine near a church.

The 33-year-old was arrested Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Newman Center after investigators found 3 grams of cocaine and drug paraphernalia while searching his home and office. His bond was set at $50,000.

The Catholic Diocese of Peoria says it has suspended Layden.

His attorney, Mark D. Lipton, did not immediately respond to an after hours message seeking comment.

How Hurricanes Get Named

Sept. 8, 2008--The Atlantic region is dealing with a steady—and scary—line-up of tropical storms. Hurricane Gustav struck last Monday with a weaker blow than anticipated, then came Hanna. Now, Ike is in effect and Josephine is on her way. So, how do the names for all these hurricanes get chosen?

G, H, I, J—well, alphabetical order is clear, but apparently there's a little more to the selection process. Short and distinguishable names are used to identify storms, instead of the older method of identifying a storm by its latitude and longitude. Naming tropical storms allows for information about them to be easily distributed, especially when multiple storms occur at once.

Every region in the United States has its own naming procedure with a pre-approved set of names familiar to that area. The storm-prone Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific have the most elaborate naming procedures. According to the National Hurricane Center, both regions have their own set of six lists. The lists are used in rotation every six years, meaning the same list of names that was used to name Gustav and company will be used again in 2014.

Each of the six alphabetized lists includes 21 pre-approved names, with the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z excluded. The name of a particular tropical storm indicates how many others have occurred that year. Our friend Gustav, thankfully tamer than his name might suggest, was the seventh storm to hit the Atlantic this year.

Other areas, like the Central and Western Pacific, use a strictly sequential selection method. Lists are not designated by year. If the third name on a list is the last storm to hit, then the first storm of the following year is named by simply picking the next on the list.

There are, of course, exceptions to the rules. When a hurricane's impact becomes too severe, deadly or costly, its name is retired from the list. A new name with the same letter is then added to the list during one of the World Meteorological Organization's annual meetings. Hurricane Katrina of 2005 was one such retiree. Others include: Hurricane Agnes (1972), Hurricane Betsy (1965) and Hurricane Andrew (1992).

The hurricane name game was an all-girls club for quite some time. In the late 19th century, Australian meteorologist Clement Wragge introduced the method of naming tropical storms after women. In 1953, after an international phonetic alphabet was introduced for naming storms, the practice of naming storms after women became common in America. The Atlantic region didn't go co-ed until 1979. And now female and male names are listed alternately in alphabetical order.

In extreme conditions, the Greek alphabet is also an option for naming hurricanes in the Atlantic. As a back-up, storms take on names like Hurricane Alpha and Tropical Storm Beta when all 21 names from that year's pre-approved list have already been used.

And while there have been several tropical storms in the Atlantic this season, here's hoping that Ike is the last name we have to remember.

Half of college students consider suicide

AUSTIN, Texas - More than half of American college students have considered suicide at some points in their lives, a new survey reveals.

The survey, results of which were presented Sunday at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association in Boston, adds to the growing body of evidence that the prevalence of suicidal thoughts is far more widespread among America’s college students than it is among the population in general. By contrast, only 15.3 percent of Americans overall have had such thoughts, the World Health Organization’s World Mental Health Survey Initiative reported in February.

The survey, part of a wider-ranging continuing study on student suicidal behaviors being conducted by David Drum, a professor of education psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, questioned 26,000 undergraduate and graduate students at 70 U.S. institutions. The results raise the startling suggestion that suicidal thoughts could be a common experience on par with substance abuse, depression and eating disorders, Drum said.
Story continues below ↓advertisement

The survey defined considering suicide as having at least one episode of suicidal thinking at some point. Slightly more than half of students said they fit that category, which is known as suicide ideation. When researchers asked about more serious episodes, 15 percent said they had “seriously considered” attempting suicide.

5 percent try to kill themselves
More than 5 percent of students said they had actually attempted suicide, which is the second-leading cause of death for college students, compared to its ranking of ninth among the U.S. population at large, according to the National Alliance on Mental Health.

“Relief from emotional or physical pain” was the top reason students cited for suicidal thinking, followed by problems with romantic relationships. A generalized desire to end their lives was next, followed by problems with school or academics.

Suicide warning signs

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among college students. Signs to watch for:
— A previous suicide attempt
— Talking about suicide
— Drug or alcohol abuse
— Feeling hopeless or helpless
— Deep depression
— Changes in behavior and personality
— Giving away favorite possessions
— Loss of interest in friends or hobbies
Source: Brown University Psychological Services

The study extrapolated that at an average college with 18,000 undergraduate students, 1,080 of them would seriously contemplate taking their lives in any year, numbers that pose troubling issues for college administrators.

The survey identified growing levels of distress among college students and diminishing resources to handle the consequences. They found that half of students who had had suicidal thoughts never sought counseling or treatment.

“We know only a quarter of suicide patients are our clients, which means 75 percent of them never come through our doors,” said Chris Brownson, director of the Counseling and Mental Health Center at the University of Texas.

Drum and other researchers said colleges needed a new model, shifting the emphasis from narrowly focused treatments involving suicidal students and a small number of mental health professionals, to one that involved the entire campus in addressing student stresses.

“Suicide is a public mental health issue,” Brownson said. “We need to focus on prevention, building resilience in students and creating communities.”

NEWS UPDATE: P-Square "Allegedly" Robbed in Cameroun

IF recent reports making rounds in the news of late are anything to go by, then maybe someone (whoever that could be) ought to institute a professional security outfit solely for the safety and well-being of our music stars.

Reports have it that the duo of Peter and Paul Okoye a.k.a P-Square were robbed at an airport in Cameroun recently and they lost an undisclosed amount of money and valuables along with most of their luggage (although they denied the incident).

Going by the recent spate of attacks and robberies that some of our musical stars have suffered, one can only wonder and ask; what is going on? Or, is it that it's just not safe anymore to be a music celebrity in these parts of the world? May God help us all.

NEWS UPDATE: D'banj Bails 9ice Out With N2m

D’Banj has finally opened up on why he bailed out 9ice with N2m to help the “Gongo Aso” rave complete his video shoots. MTV Base Award winner, D’Banj, said he gave the money to help a “cool headed friend” out of crisis, even as he still wants to help his colleagues out in the music industry.

Speaking with http://nigeriafilms.com at Planet 1, Maryland, while attending a fashion show, the “Mo Gbona Feli Feli” rave said he once needed help to shoot his first video, “Tongolo”, few years back, but none came his way until a friend from UK intervened.

“That was the turning point. 9ice is the current rave, N2m is not what should stop his video production.” “We are all one in this music industry, I’m just too happy to help a colleague out, that’s all,” he said.” Just few weeks back, 9ice had problems raising N2m to complete the nine shots for his video, but was only able to raise N7m.

Puffy T, the hottest video producer now, insisted on a million per shoot and wouldn’t handle the job unless 9ice came up with N9m. Eventually, words got to D’Banj on the plight of 9ice and he silently paid up the balance for him. 9ice was full of praises of D’Banj, confessing that he was surprised D’Banj, whom he never even approached, would do such.

“I did not go to anybody for assistance, so you can understand my reaction when Puffy T called that I should get ready to begin shooting as D’Banj had bailed me out.” Would you have stopped the video if D’Banj had not come in? http://nigeriafilms.com asked.” Of course not. What happened was that I had a wedding at hand then and wouldn’t want it to be stalled.

“I knew I would be able to raise the money after the wedding, but D’Banj has hastened my job for me. I’m excited and grateful”, he responded. As for D’Banj, “I’m no father-xmas though, but there’s no length I won’t go to help a colleague who really deserves it.” 9ice says the video will be out in few weeks.

NEWS UPDATE: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi Crowned 'King of Kings'

A meeting of more than 200 African kings and traditional rulers has bestowed the title "king of kings" on Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The rulers, wearing gold crowns, sequined capes and colourful robes met in the Libyan town of Benghazi in what was billed as a first of its kind.

Col Gaddafi urged the royals to join his campaign for African unity.

Africa's political leaders are lukewarm about his vision of merging their powers to create a single government.

"We want an African military to defend Africa, we want a single African currency, we want one African passport to travel within Africa," Col Gaddafi told the assembled dignitaries, who come from countries such as Mozambique, South Africa, Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The BBC's Rana Jawad in the Mediterranean town of Benghazi says Libya's leader wants them to create a grass-roots movement to press Africa's political leaders to sign up to his vision.

Sheikh Abdilmajid from Tanzania told the BBC that the traditional rulers could play an important role.

"The people believe in the chiefs and kings more than they believe in their governments," he said.

Ryan Nelson said he thought it was a crocodile when he first spotted the Nile monitor by the rose bushes. He was able to capture it and wrestle it into a large metal dog cage with the help of Dalton Brown from MB Reptiles, a pet store in Grants Pass.

No report on missing lizards has been filed recently with either the Josephine County sheriff's office or Grants Pass police.

But officials say whoever lost the lizard should have immediately reported it because the Nile monitor's teeth and claws make it dangerous to pets and people.

The lizard is now on display at the pet store.

Read: Five Habits of Millionaires

According to a study of college students at the Ernst & Young International Intern Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida, 59 percent of these young leaders expect to be millionaires within their lifetime. What's more, 5 percent of them expect to hit the million-dollar mark while in their 20s.

And the super-rich are a growing group. The top 0.1 percent of the population's average income was $3 million in 2002, up two and a half times the $1.2 million, adjusted for inflation, that group reported in 1980.

Earned Money vs. Easy Money

Easy money usually comes from inheritance or luck, such as winning the lottery. The track record of people who get their money through the lottery or other windfalls is usually very different from those who created their wealth themselves or who planned for an expected inheritance. Lottery winners are often a sorry lot; more than 90 percent use up their winnings within 10 years -- some go through their money in weeks or months.

But there are some consistent patterns among those people who earn or plan to inherit their money, and these five strategies may be worth emulating.

1. Avoid the Earn-to-Spend Mentality

Michael LeBoeuf, author of The Millionaire in You, points out that to increase wealth, it's essential to emulate millionaires who view money as something to save and invest, rather than income to spend. Many wealthy people live quite simply, he points out, choosing less pretentious homes than they could theoretically afford and opting for financial independence over material showmanship.

2. Focus

LeBoeuf also counsels resisting the impulse to be scattered in your efforts and interests: "Winners focus; losers spray." And goals that are clearly written down are easier to keep in focus.

3. Do Whatever Is Necessary to Meet Your Goal

People who earn their millions are able not only to focus but persevere in the pursuit of their goals. One single mom entrepreneur, Melissa Clark-Reynolds, started her first business, a health and safety consultancy, when she had a young son. En route to her goal of being a millionaire by age 35, Clarke-Reynolds and her son ate lots of pizza, did homework late at night and often slept at the office. She is now a chief executive mentor for Empower New Zealand, a global business consulting firm headquartered in London.

4. Take Calculated Risks

You have to take strategic risks to earn and grow money. And a little rebelliousness seems to help too. One interesting study found a majority of male millionaire entrepreneurs had been in trouble with school authorities or the police during their adolescence.

5. Be Generous

And why doesn't it surprise us that millionaires are often very generous? Sometimes it's for the tax breaks, obviously, but often it's not. One Jewish Swiss millionaire, for instance, flew to Israel to give $5,000 in cash to a waiter at a Jerusalem café who foiled a Palestinian suicide bombing. Among the most generous of millionaires are those from North America, who are, according to a Merrill Lynch Cap-Gemini report, two to five times more likely to give to causes they value than their European counterparts.

These five habits are a pretty good prescription for living happily even if you're not a millionaire.

But LeBoeuf insists it's not so unusual to be a millionaire. As of 2004, there were 8.2 million households with a net worth of more than $1 million. And are the folks in those households happy? Yes, says professor Andrew Oswald of the University of Warwick in the UK. After studying more than 9,000 people over eight years, Oswald concluded that people who come into money are happier. The happiest among them, he says, seem to be "highly educated, well-paid women who have jobs."

And how much money does the professor say it takes to be happy? "About $1 million, give or take a little."

Yahoo! boys make N500 billion annually — Expert Says

EMMANUEL AKINWUMI, Senior Correspondent
Abuja —

Cyber spammers, otherwise called Yahoo boys, make an annual income of N10 billion in Nigeria, of which the banking sector is said to be worst hit, losing about N7.8 billion to the scourge.
The various types of rampant cyber corrupt practices in the banking sector through which the banks lose huge sums of money include on-line financial fraud, identity theft, system penetration by outsiders, data and network sabotage and denial of service attacks.

Globally, the economic crime is costing the world economy sums in the region of over $500 billion annually.

The high rate of the crime in Nigeria has, however, been attributed to the lack of necessary legislation to deal with cybercrime.
The Chief Executive Officer of Global Network for Cyber Solution, a non-government and non-profit organization, Segun Olugbile made the disclosure in Abuja.

According to him, statistics show that there has been a significant increase in the figures over the past 30 years, adding that in 1970 the amount lost was approximately $5 billion, and rose to about $20 billion in 1980 and reached approximately $100 billion in 1990.

He lamented that Nigeria with the largest population of black people in the world does not have any reliable law to deal with cyber crime, but noted that the meeting of the organization held recently in Abuja after which a communiqué was released has proffered solutions to the problem.

According to him, part of the recommendations was that government should declare cyber crime and cyber security as a national emergency with conscious political will and special budgetary resources to effectively engage the challenges presented by its impact.

The meeting also wants the government to sponsor numerous bills and enact Acts to deal with the excesses of the pandemic.
Also, it called for the establishment of a national institute for cyberspace infrastructure protection, constitute a national standing committee on cyber crime and cyber security, among others.

Olugbile stated that there were reliable case studies to show that an attack on a national infrastructure “could by virtue of its catastrophic consequences, completely paralyze the machinery of Government.

Third Dimension Technologies (TDT) introduces new car navigation system in Nigeria

Third Dimension Technologies - a Lagos, London and New York based Geo - Informatics consulting company introduced an integrated suite of GPS mapping services for geographically navigating through roads and finding places of interest in Nigeria.

Nigeria is no more amongst the list of nations with a poor Geo Spatial data gathering and visualization record. This is brought about by the booming business of Vehicle Tracking, Facilities Management, In Car Navigation Systems and online Interactive Mapping. This is further enhanced with the launch of the two Nigerian Satellites which easily generate data for use within these applications.

SERVICES OFFERED

One of the forerunners - and indeed the only company in Africa who has implemented such a solution - recently launched their online mapping service. On the website, you can search for addresses, find information and location of services like restaurants, petrol station, banks, hotels etc. You can also do a "find my nearest search", this allows you to search services closer to your street address. Innovatively, they also have a nationwide route planning module, here you can plan your route nationwide before setting out on a journey, you will be able to print turn by turn directions, check total length of route and print these maps to guide on your journey. This is indeed innovative. You can also search for maps of any place nationwide, this is absolutely ground breaking.

OTHER PRODUCTS AVAILABLE

The company also distributes a GARMIN product called CEASER CITY NAVIGATOR, these are mapping software that is installable on GARMIN GPS devices, both voice prompted and non voice promted, you simply search and input your destination and then the device navigates you all the way to where you are travelling to. The navigator series can be purchased for N/S/W/E of Nigeria, or for the entire country or for individual cities.

This is a genuine effort by an indigenous company to make the use of spatial data known and encouraged in Nigeria, hence they are offering these services free for now, so next time, before you travel, log online, plan your route so that you wont waste precious time finding the route to your destination.

For more information, visit the website at: www.ceaser-web.com.

NEWS UPDATE: Nigeria arranges 'HIV marriages'

HIV-positive couples are being paired up for marriage by a northern Nigerian state in an attempt to reduce the spread of the disease.

But international Aids experts have voiced concern at the plan.

Warren Naamara from UNAids said the two people could have different strains of the virus, which could interact. He said the couples should use condoms.

Around 70 couples have been matched up in the last few weeks, Bauchi state authorities told the BBC.

Authorities in the state say they are trying to stop HIV spreading and battle the "isolation and stigma" of the disease.

Some 3% of Nigeria's adult population - 2.4 million people - is estimated to be HIV-positive

Bauchi State operates under Sharia, or Islamic laws, and the use of condoms is not encouraged.

Speed-dating

Dr Lirwan Mohammed, the executive secretary of the Bauchi Action Committee on Aids, said the polygamous culture of northern Nigeria had increased the spread of the disease.

"Polygamy, as we have discovered, has become a potent source of spreading the HIV scourge in Nigeria," he said.

The marriages were arranged under strict confidentiality, he said.

"Suitors who have tested positive and are willing to wed each other, can reduce the spread of the virus and also cushion the psychological trauma of isolation."

Couples are introduced to each other during counselling sessions and are free to say yes or no to each potential partner, says the BBC's Shehu Saulawa.

One groom, speaking to the BBC's Hausa service on condition of anonymity, said he was confident the plan would combat the spread of Aids in Nigeria.

"If we should fear God, we should stop spreading the HIV virus through indiscriminate marriage, thereby infecting innocent people," he said.

"Marrying someone with the same HIV status will reduce the spread of the scourge."

Danger

But the head of the United Nations agency in charge of battling the disease in the country said the scheme was dangerous.

"There may be a very big danger in terms of the spread of the disease," said Mr Naamara

He also said it was "not advisable" for such couples to have children.

"The chances are that child would become a double orphan, they would lose both parents."

"Our advice is they should use condoms."

Last month Bauchi state reportedly locked up sex workers who had tested positive for HIV.

Swiss govt adopts new measures concerning Abacha loot

The detection and subsequent repatriation of the Abacha loot from Swiss banks has forced the Swiss government to adopt pragmatic measures that have made the country‘s financial sector more transparent.

Mr. Nicolas Lang, Swiss Ambassador covering Ghana, Benin and Togo disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday at the ongoing Accra High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness, Ghana.

Lang said that the processes that led to returning the money to the Nigerian government had gradually become a model for the world to rate and see Swiss banks as some of the most transparent and credible financial institutions globally.

“The Swiss government put in a lot of efforts including contesting against fierce litigation from the Abacha family to restitute the fund.

“Missing state monies ending up in our banks is detrimental to our image and Swiss financial sector reputation.”

He said that mechanism had been put in place to enable the government and operators in the country‘s financial sector to detect stolen monies from developing countries.

He observed that it was very difficult to monitor the entrance of such funds but assured that “any fund discovered will be immediately repatriated.”

The ambassador also said that the country was able to return recently stolen funds by a former Malian President.

“The Swiss government even went further to offset the legal fees that made it possible for the funds to be repatriated to Mali,” he said.

In the case of Nigeria, Lang revealed that all funds traced to Abacha in Swiss banks were completely repatriated under a Swiss government, World Bank and Nigerian government arrangement.

“The arrangement was that the three groups will ensure effective monitoring and utilisation of the funds as well as make sure it was put to good use,” Lang said.

NEWS UPDATE: NYC Man Charged With Selling Stolen Bras On Web

AP) A New York man has been charged with selling $80,000 worth of stolen Victoria's Secret bras online.

Prosecutors say 41-year-old George Tutaya was arraigned Tuesday on charges of possessing stolen property. He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.

A telephone call to his attorney hasn't been returned.

Prosecutors say Tutaya used eBay auction and PayPal payment accounts to sell the brassieres for about $25 each. The bras retail for $40 to $80.

Prosecutors say records recovered at Tutaya's home in Queens link him to the sale of more than 2,000 bras. They say another 650 stolen bras were recovered in his home.

NEWS UPDATE: End of an era for the 'accidental' porn star

AMATEUR sex tapes are credited with stealing customers from pornographers, but the wealth of inadvertently leaked material may be about to run dry.

Co-author of Australian study The Porn Report, Dr Kath Albury, said people would become much more wary of what they let out of the bedroom after seeing the possible ramifications.

"The technology has probably gotten ahead of us here and the penny hasn't dropped yet for a lot of people posting this material yet," Dr Albury said.

"But they will come to realise there is still a lot of stigma attached to it.

"You and your friends may not have a problem with it but your parents or your employers could and once the image is out there you can't get it back."

NEWS UPDATE: Nigerian Man to Divorce 86 Wives

A Nigerian religious leader with 86 wives has accepted an Islamic decree ordering him to divorce all but four of them, local authorities say.

A spokesman for the emir of Bida told the BBC that Mohammadu Bello Abubakar, 84, agreed on Saturday to comply with the decree.

Last week one of Nigeria's top Islamic bodies, the Jamatu Nasril Islam, sentenced him to death.

The sentence was lifted but he was threatened with eviction from his home.

Earlier, Mr Abubakar had challenged Islamic scholars, saying there was no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives.

"I have not contravened any established law that would warrant my being banished from the land... There is no law that says one must not marry more than four wives," the AFP news agency reported him as saying.

"All my wives are with children and some of these are people I have married and stayed with for over 30 years. How can they expect me to leave them within two days?" he reportedly told local newspapers.

The former teacher and Islamic preacher lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children.

Niger is one of the Muslim majority states to have reintroduced Sharia punishments since 2000.

Several people have been sentenced to death for adultery by Sharia courts but none of these sentences have been carried out.
